THOUGHT PROVOKING – INSPIRATIONAL
Solace at Sunset
Life appears empty sometimes. Times like losing a job, ending a marriage, loss of a loved one, or financial collapse.
All endings. I guess that's it. Things that end remain empty and hard to fill, replace or let go.
Then how do you explain sunsets?
It is indeed an end to something or many things. The day ends, the celebration concludes, the band stops playing, the dance is over, the lights go out and we "call it a day."
Seems empty to me.
Why then do we love sunsets?
It seems to go so fast when you don't want the day to end and much too slow when you can't wait for it to be over.
My curiosity asked "How long is a sunset?" My searching found this answer. Rather factual, cold and lacking any emotional ties to the experience, still the answer.
"It very much depends on the observer's latitude. On the equator, it would take about 2 minutes because the Sun is moving perpendicular to the horizon.. At other latitudes, it moves at a shallower angle. For example, at latitude 50 degrees, it takes about 4 minutes. From the north or south pole, it takes more than a day because it is a function of the Earth's orbital motion, not its rotation. Atmospheric refraction makes the Sun appear higher in the sky and will tend to slightly increase these times." (Yahoo Answers)
"How long does a sunset take?"
A sunset takes the colors of the day, the beauty of a collection of moments, the very essence of ever having been, and squeezes them into enough time to remember, forget, embrace, let go, fall in love, sigh, kiss, wave goodbye or say "thanks." It does all that and means much more
Perhaps it is not so much the event that captures my heart but knowing it will all happen again, but never the same.
It is knowing that, that gives me "Solace at Sunset."

Mr. Mitcham's Peaches
Mr. Mitcham grows the best peaches around. Almost as much fun as eating the delicious fruit is taking a drive out to the orchard in early spring. You can see acres and acres of gorgeous peach blossoms, each a promise of future fruit. I like to just sit and drink in this beautiful sight. One particular spring, I walked among the trees to take a closer look at some strange things Mr. Mitcham was doing to his peach trees. The first thing I noticed was that all the topmost branches had been cut off the trees. What a pity, I thought. Those trees were gorgeous and he has ruined them! He went to all the trouble to plant them and tend them and now he is ruining them. As I drew closer, I saw that not only had he cut off their top branches, but he had put strong metal bands around some of the branches forcing them lower.
There was one more thing I noticed that was some sort of discipline for the tree. On the outermost part of some of the limbs there were tied small styrofoam cups filled with concrete, the weight of which forced the branches down within reach.
As summer approached, the orchard produced a bumper crop. The most beautiful and tastiest peaches ever! Why do you suppose that happened? Was it a coincidence? No. It was carefully planned and the plan was just as meticulously executed. The result was a great harvest of wonderful fruit! And the bonus was that the pickers did not have to spend hours on ladders reaching the highest limbs for the fruit.
Meanwhile, across the way, a neighbor had a few scraggly-looking peach trees that had never been tended. They had never been pruned or fertilized or sprayed for insects. They had never known the gardener's touch, and their peaches were small, few, and not very tasty.
A knee bowed and a life placed in the hands of the Master Gardener will result in His loving and wise grooming. This grooming and shaping will result in the bearing of much sweet smelling and beautiful fruit, fruit that will be of eternal significance. The trees across the way, who are having it their way and who have chosen to be their own masters will look on enviously and with regret as they observe the Gardener's finished product.
